Winter Fairy Instructions
If you looked at fleece under a microscope you would see thousands of little ‘scale’- like points. It is these points which lock together if agitated – with warm water or a felting needle – and produce felt.
Felting needles have barbs on their ends, by repeatedly stabbing the fleece these barbs pick up the scales and form the fleece into denser material. Please be careful of the needles they are very, very sharp and ALWAYS felt into the foam block and repeatedly stab gently but firmly.
Take your fairy body and place it on the felting block.. Make the Skirt Pull about a 7" strip of fleece from the white and grey fleece. You can either blend the two colours together , lay them in stripes or even layer them . If you wish to blend the fleece hold both colours in one hand and gently tear them apart, mixing the two shades until you are happy with the overall colour. Make a hole in the centre and pop your fairy through. Alternatively, you can felt the strips around her waist . Needle felt the skirt in place - gently but firmly push the needle repeatedly into the fleece where you wish the skirt to be fixed. Make her Shawl Take a piece of white bamboo roving. Make a hole in the centre and place your fairy through. This piece rests on her shoulders. Needle felt in place. Wrap a small strand around her waist. If you wish to add a needle felted holly and berries to her belt - choose either bamboo or merino fleece. Take a very small amount of green and place where you would like your first leaf to be. Keep the fleece fluffy, Use your needle to guide the fleece into a holly leaf shape, stabbing as you go to fix in place. Repeat this until you have as many leaves as you would like. For the berries take a small piece of red and needle felt amongst the green leaves. Next her hair.... Take a small amount of bamboo fibre and frame your fairies face with it. Needle felt in place, being careful of your fingers. Then add more strands gradually. Choose a colour for her hair decoration and simply felt it into the side of her head - to give the impression of a flower. If you wish a braid, take three strands and plait them. It helps to stab them into the felting block to keep them together - it will be tricky at first but as the fleece tightens it is easier. Needle felt this in place. How to Make wings..... Choose what colour you would like your wings to be and pull about a 7" strip of fleece. Taking a very small, thin strand of this colour , tie it in the middle of your strip - to create two fluffy pieces on either side. Needle felt this in place on the back of your fairy. Either on top or underneath her hair. Winter Fairy Instructions If you wish to hang your fairy as a decoration, thread a needle with some cotton and sew through the top of the fairies head and tie into a loop
